“Fraternity is not only the result of conditions of respect for individual freedoms, or even of a certain regulated fairness. […] Fraternity has something positive to offer freedom and equality.” So we read in the encyclical Brothers All, an invitation to rediscover the generative power of fraternity in today’s world. It is precisely from this spirit that the World Meeting on Human Fraternity 2025, now in its third edition, comes to life. The event, promoted by St. Peter’s Basilica, is set for Friday, Sept. 12 and Saturday, Sept. 13, in Rome and will see men and women in dialogue in 15 thematic tables, real laboratories of confrontation and planning.
“Our humble intent is to propose to the world the horizon of fraternity as the key to a new political order, a new economic order and a new social order to human existence. The principle of universal fraternity can offer the coordinates for writing the history of this epochal change in a constructive way: attentive to people, respectful of differences, in harmony with creation and a guarantor of the freedom and equal dignity of every human being. As Pope Leo XIV recalled in his homily at the beginning of his pontificate, “Brothers, sisters, this is the hour of love! Together, as one people, as brothers all, let us walk towards God and love one another” – said Cardinal Mauro Gambetti -. The experience of the Tables helps to meet and listen to each other, to know and recognize each other. Rediscovering fraternity and choosing words and gestures based on the human can nourish the life of institutions and businesses, hospitals and sports centers … all the way to Artificial Intelligence with meanings and values. On the evening of the 13th, fraternity will also take center stage, told through the universal language of music and the stories of those who have made it a life choice. A jubilee event to spread grace in the world.”
“The world suffers. Wars, loneliness, new poverty. This is why we pause to ask: What does it mean to be human today? We will do this among diverse people, in culture and tradition, language and religions, generations and places of origin. The 15 Tables and the Assembly of the Human are a cultural and spiritual process,” said Father Francesco Occhetta. “Each table is called to face a threefold challenge: to define the principle of fraternity in its own world; to develop a metric to measure it; to gather good practices and take action. The desire is to deliver an alternative synodal movement to the war and violence present in the world. We must believe it together: ‘Fraternity has something positive to offer freedom and equality’ (FT No. 103).”
The beating heart of the Meeting on Friday, September 12, will be the 15 Thematic Tables: Agriculture; Environment and Sustainability; Local Governments; Arts and Literature; Children; Economy and Finance; Education; Political Training; Business; Information; Artificial Intelligence; Labor; Health; Sports; Third Sector.
These tables will meet in particularly symbolic places in the city, such as the Campidoglio, the FAO, the headquarters of the European Union, the ABI and the Province of Rome, underscoring the importance of open dialogue between institutions, civil society, academia and the world of information. It will be a unique opportunity to network ideas, experiences and good practices, with the aim of giving concreteness to the values of fraternity and building together new perspectives for the future.
On Saturday, September 13, in the evocative setting of the Hall of Horatii and Curiazi at the Capitol, the Human Assembly will be held. It will be a moment of extraordinary value, led by Nobel Laureates and representatives of international institutions. Participants will gather the work done in the previous day’s thematic tables and begin a “synodal journey” with the goal of engaging communities around the world to recognize and illuminate “what it means to be human today.” Among others taking part will be Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, Archpriest of St. Peter’s Basilica, Vicar General of Vatican City and President of the Fabbrica di San Pietro; Graça Machel Mandela, Mozambican activist and politician, co-founder and Vice-President of The Elders; Maria Ressa, Journalist and Nobel Peace Laureate 2021.
THE CONCLUSIVE EVENT – On Saturday evening, St. Peter’s Square will become the center of an international event entitled “Grace for the World.” Internationally renowned witnesses and artists will take turns on stage, including Maestro Andrea Bocelli, Pharrell Williams with the Voices of Fire gospel choir, John Legend, Karol G and the choir of the Diocese of Rome directed by Maestro Marco Frisina. The show will be made even more impressive by an aerial display of about 3,000 drones and lights by Nova Sky Stories, with images inspired by the Sistine Chapel. The event will be open to the public in St. Peter’s Square and broadcast live worldwide.
